It is no news that obtaining a Medical degree can be very tasking and time-consuming. While this may be frustrating for many, it is important to understand that the delicate nature of living beings’ health is the most prominent reason for such complexities. Currently, the following are the basic stages you need to pass through in order to become certified and practicing medical doctor.

Stage1: Bachelor’s Degree

Before applying for a medical school, it is necessary to have obtained a standard bachelor’s degree in a particular medical field. During this stage, you should ensure that courses in science studies are dominant in your choices as this is a major determinant for acceptance into a medical school. It is equally expected that prospective students would have taken up some courses in fields like mathematics, social sciences and English.

Stage 2: Medical School

Usually, the duration of a medical school is about four years. However, the years have been divided into two phases. The first two years are basically for preparatory classes in medical practices but in the last two, students are instructed to acquire on-field knowledge by visiting and participating in different activities of various hospital departments. Through this, prospective medical practitioners would gain adequate experience. Although, they work under the supervision of other experts. In addition, during the final year in a medical school, students are examined through a series of practical and theoretical tests.

Stage 3: Residency

The duration of residency programs is usually between three to eight years, covering medical principles and specialties that range from general to specific. Furthermore, partakers are given the opportunity to choose the types of residency programs that align with their careers. Residents’ duties are known to very extensive. They could be in charge of collating and ascertaining patient histories, interpreting results from labs, administering physical examinations and attending different conferences.

Stage 4: Licensure

Every doctor is mandated to obtain a Medical license before he or she begins to practice the profession. In order to be considered for licensure, applicants are expected to have previously earned a medical degree from an appropriate medical school. That aside, applicants must have gone through the residency program as well.

Stage 5: Certification in a particular specialization

Among the stages involved in having a standard career in Medicine, this is the only stage that is optional. However, acquiring additional certifications that apply to your field of specialization is definitely a boost in terms of employment opportunities. Just as is found in other fields, adding extra knowledge to the basic ones would give you an edge.
