As it has been hinted in Architecture: Creativity before Manpower, a licensed architect must have secured a bachelor’s degree in the field, amassed adequate and relevant work experience during an internship program and excelled in the Architect Registration Examination.

This implies that being a graduate of Architecture is just one of the stages to pass through when pursuing a valuable career in the field. However, all aspiring architects are expected to earn a Bachelor of Architecture degree after 5 years of rigorous studies in a tertiary institution. The years of studying is considered to be rigorous because students in the field will have to take courses in building design, architectural history, and its associated theories. In addition, keen attention is paid to sub-fields such as mathematics, physical sciences, construction methods, structures, liberal arts, professional practices and CADD (computer-aided design and drafting).

Usually, architectural registration boards across different countries make it a mandate that every graduate of architecture goes through an adequately timed but fairly paid internship program. This commonly lasts for about three years, after which such persons can then write the Architect Registration Examination.

For this phase, most graduates work with architectural firms who have provisions for interns and are connected with a related regulatory body in the country. However, permissions are also granted to a few who desire to be trained in other similar careers as in engineering. For students who must have completed internship programs while studying, its duration can be deducted from the 3 years that have been originally assigned for training.

The functions of interns in architectural firms include Organization of drawings on CADD, a compilation of valid specifications of building materials, preparation of architectural documents, the building of model constructions, among others. After all these have been done, supervisors, who are mostly licensed architects, will then make some final touches and edits before signing and approving such documents.

Advanced qualifications

As necessary as it may seem in the long run, attaining further qualifications in architecture is optional.  For instance, the position of an Architectural and Engineering Manager can only be achieved after many years of work experience in a managerial role. This is because the basic responsibility of such an expert is to monitor all the activities of architects working within an organization. Equally, an Architectural and Engineering Manager is expected/ required to carry out large-scale construction works.

Architects’ Traits

Creativity: Since architects are charged with designing the entire outlook of buildings, it is paramount that their outputs reflect creativity.

Technicality: To successfully make use of the CADD program, it is necessary to possess adequate technical skills.

Analytical Mind: An architect must be aware of the context and content of any design that he or she has created. For instance, the specific positions of all mechanical systems, as well as the ways these systems interact with building operations, have to be properly understood.

Other common traits that should be found in every architect include the ability to project the end product of a building before its completion, qualitative organizational skills and the ability to share or present ideas explicitly.

As far as earning is concerned, there are three different grades in the architectural sector.  While the annual income for highest earners is around $130,000, the lowest earners still get as much as $46, 000. Therefore, an averagely paid architect earns a total of $77,000 annually.

Since architects are charged with designing the structures of important buildings like schools, malls, offices, houses/ mansions, healthcare facilities and many others, the demand for their expertise will continue to rise. This is particularly due to the fact that these aforementioned buildings are continuously developed from time to time.

As the field continues to advance, architects with a sound understanding of “Green Design” are expected to be in higher demand. More so, architects are already being tasked to design structures intended for water conservation and those for controlling different forms of pollution.
