Key Changes in Australia’s Policy 2024

• Student Visa Reforms: Key changes have been introduced to the student visa program. Effective from March 2024, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement which ensures that the primary purpose of an applicant’s stay in Australia is to study and that they intend to return to their home country once their studies are complete, will be replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) requirement which ensures that applicants are genuine students coming to Australia with the primary intention of studying and are capable of completing their course.
This change aims to ensure that only those with genuine intentions to study and return home benefit from Australia’s education system. The new criteria will allow you to stay and work temporarily, with the possibility of eventually becoming a permanent resident, connecting your education path with your career goals.
• IELTS Requirement: The IELTS required for the study and work visa has been increased. For students preparing to graduate, the Temporary Graduate visa has increased from 6.0 to 6.5, the student visa from 5.5 to 6.0, and Students in Package English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) from 4.5 to 5.0.
• Visa Financial Requirements: Financial requirements for student visas have been updated to reflect a proportion of the national minimum wage, increasing the amount students need to have as financial support.
Beginning from May 10, 2024, if you are applying to study in Australia, you must provide A$29,710 proof of funds to cover your living expenses for one year and if you are bringing a partner or children, you must show proof of funds of A$10,394 for a partner and A$4,449 per child.
