Useful skills Abroad
Before travelling out of your country either as a student or a skilled worker, there are certain basic essential skills that you’d need to learn. These skills come in handy especially during the process of settling down. You do not need to go to a university to learn these skills, all you need is an internet-connected phone or laptop to get materials, then read and learn. However, there are some skills that may require more extensive learning process.
Over the years a lot of hands-on skills have been in demand and even in the coming years, it has been projected that there would be an increase in demand for personnel with strong practical and specific skills to fill certain positions in the growing economy of the world’s prosperous countries.
Here are useful skills that you should consider learning before migrating:
- IT skills
Information technology is a wide field and requires that you identify the specific area you’d like to acquire skills in. Some of the fields are digital marketing, UI/UX design, and coding (software development). These fields have a favorable job outlook in most countries and learning these skills can give you an edge when searching for a job.
- MS Word/MS excel
MS Word is a tool used for writing, making memos, and paper reports. While MS Excel is a spreadsheet tool used for calculations, charts, and recording data. These tools are basic and are easy to use. You can also learn advanced MS excel like V-lookup which is used to combine two spreadsheets. This skill is essential to start a career in data science and if you have a competent knowledge of spreadsheet (either MS excel or Google sheets), you can easily get a job as a Data entry personnel.
- How to drive
Learning how to drive from your country is important, although most countries have different driving methods and you may need to learn the method when you get to the foreign country. However, knowing the basic skill of driving can be useful in a new environment especially when you intend to buy a car.
- Cutting and styling hair
These skills are often underrated; but then, learning how to cut or style hair before you travel is a useful skill to acquire. You may not intend to make money out of the skill, but it could be used for yourself especially in a new environment when you do not know anyone yet, and you do not know how far or close a salon is to you. Hair making abroad is sometimes always expensive as well, so you could save yourself a lot of money sometimes.
- Adaptability
Learning how to adapt to a new environment is a useful skill. You will need to adapt to the weather especially if the weather is different from your home country.
- Communication
Communication is different with people. You should learn how to communicate effectively with people in your environment in order not to be misunderstood.
- Cultural awareness
If you have already figured out the country you will be traveling to, you should go online and learn a few things about the people, the culture of the country, and the food they eat amongst other things.
- Problem-solving skills
In line with communication, you should learn how to solve problems if the need arises especially with people who are not from your country.
