Carleton University is a non-denominational university based in Ottawa Canada. Carleton was founded in 1942 to help Ottawa’s youth with the opportunity to continue their formal education. 

The university is supported by charitable donations from the Ottawa community which makes it unique among other universities in Ontario. 

From the university’s humble beginnings on First Avenue in Ottawa, Carleton has grown into a dynamic research and educational institution with a tradition of anticipating and leading change. 

The university is located on more than 100 acres, on a site between the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, not far from downtown Ottawa.

In 2019, the school reported enrollment of 31,202 students including 27,152 undergraduate and 4,050 graduate students supported by 778 lecturers.

In 2016, Ottawa had 934,243 residents, making it the fourth-largest city and metropolis. In June 2019, the city of Ottawa estimated that it had a population of more than one million. 

Founded in 1826 as Bytown and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city has developed into the political center of Canada. Its original borders were expanded through numerous annexations and finally replaced by new incorporation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. 

The name of the city was chosen based on the Ottawa River, whose name is derived from the Algonquin Odawa, which means “to act”. 

Ottawa has the most educated population of any Canadian city and is home to several colleges and universities, research and cultural institutions which include the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, the National Center for the Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, and numerous national museums.
